Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

Develop Capacity of Existing Systems

The Child Abuse Prevention Program focuses on integrating child maltreatment prevention strategies into settings and systems that serve large numbers of infants, toddlers, young children and their families, particularly the early education/child care and primary pediatric health care systems. The foundation believes that the best strategy for reducing child maltreatment is to infuse prevention practices into the “normal,” non-stigmatizing service systems that families encounter routinely and parents would comfortably choose to turn to for help and support - rather than trying to fund a separate prevention infrastructure or working “backwards” from the child welfare system.

To accomplish the Child Abuse Prevention Program's goal of strengthening professional capacity within existing service systems to prevent abuse and neglect, the foundation may support the following types of activities:

  • Training, education, professional development and fellowship opportunities;
  • Development of materials and tools for practitioners;
  • Support for statewide or citywide initiatives, primarily through national intermediaries;
  • Technical assistance that strengthens service systems.

Foundation grants support initiatives operating at significant scale, not individual, local programs.
