For three days in May, the 2005-2006 Clinical Research Fellows met near Duke Farms – the 2,700-acre estate created by Doris Duke’s father in Hillsborough, New Jersey – for the culminating activity of their fellowship experience.
The class of 74 fellows gathered with Program Leaders and Administrators to present their research in both poster and podium sessions. The meeting overlapped with the Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Meeting, allowing the fellows to interact with and hear presentations from numerous other grantees of the DDCF’s Medical Research Program.
Featured speaker Dr. Peter Mugyenyi, the Director of the Joint Clinical Research Centre in Kampala, Uganda, gave a presentation entitled "Priority of HIV/AIDS Research in Africa" following dinner on the first night.
The Program Leaders concluded the meeting with a session called "Meet the Program Leaders," in which they gave insight into the current direction of clinical research as well as the paths they had each taken into the profession. The presentation highlighted Paul Watkins, M.D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine; Joel Palefsky, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine; Michael DeBaun, M.D., M.P.H., of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis; Karen Zier, Ph.D., of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and John Forrest, Jr., M.D., of the Yale University School of Medicine.
