Harvard Medical School
Boston, Massachusetts
Eighty-one fellows gathered at the Conference Center at the New Research Building at Harvard Medical in Boston with program leaders and administrators to share their research experiences and to commemorate the end of their fellowship year.
Following dinner on the first night, keynote speaker Thomas P. Stossel, M.D., Harvard Medical School Professor and Director of a new Division of Translational Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, gave a provoking presentation entitled "Commerce in Medical Practice, Education, and Research: Conflict or Harmony of Interests?"
Over the next day and a half, fellows presented their research at speaker and poster sessions. In between these sessions were outstanding talks by distinguished faculty from Harvard Medical School: Dennis A. Ausiello, M.D., Barry R. Bloom, Ph.D., Joan W. Miller, M.D., and Caren Solomon, M.D., M.P.H. David G. Nathan, M.D., chair of the DDCF Medical Research Program's Scientific Advisory Council, gave an inspiring graduation speech.
To celebrate the productive year, the second evening was festive as fellows, program leaders and administrators toured Boston by land and river via Boston Duck Tours. Afterward, they had dinner at Legal Sea Foods at Copley Place overlooking Boston.
The meeting concluded with two panel sessions: “Research During Residency: Pros and Cons” and "Meet the Program Leaders." Residency directors and program leaders offered a range of views for fellows to think about when considering research projects during residency. In closing, participating program leaders offered insight into the paths each had each taken into the profession of clinical research as well as their direction for the future.
