May 26-28, 2009
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Over a day and a half, 128 fellows gathered at the Medical Biomolecular Research Building on UNC’s medical campus with program leaders and administrators to present their research in both podium and poster sessions. In between these sessions were outstanding talks by two distinguished faculty from the University of North Carolina Medical School, Ronald Falk, MD, and Howard McLeod, PharmD.
The meeting kicked off with an opening night dinner at the Carolina Inn. The next morning started with a panel breakfast of CRF alumni sharing their post-CRF experiences. Drs. Stephanie Diamantis (Mount Sinai CRF 2004-2005), Lee Hartsell (UNC CRF 2006-2007), Anup Parikh (UNC CRF 2003-2004), and Vani Sabesan (Iowa CRF 2002-2003) offered a range of views for fellows to think about when considering research during residency. After the panel concluded, the panel members spoke with fellows one-on-one for insights into planning one’s future direction.
Prior to dinner on the second night, a slideshow highlighted the work of the fellows throughout the year. To cap off the evening, keynote speaker Myron S. Cohn, MD, Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Heath and Director of the Institute of Global Health and Infectious Disease at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, gave a delightful speech sharing his lessons learned during his career journey.
