University of Iowa Coursework

The University of Iowa Doris Duke Program provides fellows with the option of taking a course during the fellowship year. Courses are offered through the Carver College of Medicine, the College of Public Health and the Graduate College. Fellows may choose any course they wish as long as it relates to their research topic. The course may be taken for credit or noncredit.

Required Courses:

  • All Doris Duke Fellows are required to attend the twice-monthly Doris Duke Forum. The forum covers a variety of topics including research ethics, scientific methodology, technology transfer, and professional development (presentation skills, poster development, writing for scientific journals, and career building.). Fellows present their research twice during the forum year. No academic credit is awarded for this course.

Optional Courses:

Any course is optional as long as it relates to the research topic. Courses may be taken for credit or noncredit at the discretion of the fellow. Typical courses include:

  • Biostatistics Methods
  • Advanced Topics in Immunology
  • Principals of Epidemiology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Human Genetics
  • The Genetics of Cancer
  • Medical Imaging Physics
  • Writing and Medicine
